As the sun sets on the summer fashion season, our thoughts – and wardrobes – are focusing on the months ahead. And with cosy knits, retro nostalgia, bold tailoring, and laid-back luxury fabrics, the fall and winter 2022 season has plenty to inspire and excite as we prepare to embrace those cold winter nights.
So, as you pack away your summer wardrobe for another year, we talk through the must-have trends for fall and winter 2022.
‘Chic casual’ sweaters
No fall and autumn season is complete without snuggle-worthy knits and 2022 is taking it to another level. Channelling our desire for comfort, texture, and style, the knit gets an anytime-wear update, with unisex designs such as the Ami Paris sweater, luxe materials, and playful styling to bring life and colour to this wardrobe staple.
Chunky sweaters feature large, with gorgeous twists of traditional designs such as Aran and Fair isle, seen on the key catwalks, including Louis Vuitton, Chloe, and Lanvin. Expect layers, oversized turtlenecks, and silhouette-enhancing waist knots.
Leather
The tactile theme continues in our fall and winter 2022 trend list, with super-soft leather the material of choice for many of the top design houses. The 2022 offering of high-quality vegan leather is also causing a stir this season.
In a choice of deep rich colours, leather jackets are a season staple, including retro biker jackets, preppy-style bombers, and the versatile flight jacket design. Leather skirts and statement-making full-length leather trench coats are also a key fall/winter 2022 trend.
Maxi lengths
Fall/Winter 2022 sees a 90s revival, with the maxi length looming large after a spring and summer of mini hemlines. With these floor-sweeping designs comes eye-catching silhouettes and drama which works perfectly against the backdrop of the fall and winter season. For 2022, the line is more streamlined rather than boho, with slim maxi skirts the key trend. Team with a crisp T and bomber jacket and chunky boots for a look that will see you through to spring.
It’s not just dresses and skirts that are heading towards the floor, as the maxi coat is also a key trend. Perfect for cold winter days, the maxi coat is a dramatic addition to any wardrobe. Add in sumptuous fabrics such as velvet and faux fur, as seen in the likes of Fendi and The Row, and wrapping up against the cold has never been a more luxurious experience!
Oversized blazers
Another style throw-back that has had a fall/winter 2022 update is oversized, boxy tailoring. The oversized blazer is the one to watch this season. With a gender-fluid style, the blazer can be either single or double-breasted and looks stunning in one of those outdoor winter fabrics such as tweed or tartan. A strong shoulder is also a must.
Soften with a maxi skirt for a flirty feel or vamp up with a bodycon dress, the oversized blazer can also be used to layer under a sumptuous overcoat for a complete fall/winter 2022 look. For style inspiration, Dolce & Gabbana has some stunning blazer designs.
The tank top
As a fall/winter 2022 wardrobe basic, you can’t go wrong with our next key trend, the simple yet versatile tank top vest. This season, white is the dominant colour, as seen in Prada’s 2022 collection, while alternative fabrics, including soft leather, are also making their mark. Team with a shirt or long-sleeved top, or wear under an oversized blazer, the humble tank top also adds a paired-down twist to an out-there maxi skirt or form-fitting trousers.
‘Look at me’ tailoring
Our final fall/winter 2022 key trend is an office staple that pushes the boundaries, thanks to the focus on making a splash. Strong, bold, colourful, and individual, statement tailoring is both wearable and head-turning, and this season can be dialled up or down. Choose a power shape in your jacket, offset by a simple t-shirt or strappy top. Or, go retro with fabric – velvet featured heavily in the fall/winter collections of the likes of Tom Ford and Alberta Ferretti. Colour is big for this season too, including bubble-gum pink and vivid greens. Not for the faint-hearted but for those who like to stand out on those dark winter nights, now’s the time to shine bright.
